we're in our motel room off the highay in Marathon Ontario.
we just got back from the only restaurant / lounge across the road that was open... we're all 'zombied'. aka we all just drank zombies, which are 3 oz of different rums.. and.. some citrus flavouring.

today was mostly driving. a brief stop in Thunder Bay to eat baconators in Thunder Bay.

last night we stayed in Dryden. it all feels the same.. driving, hotels, motels.. what? last night had a pool, tonight.. not. last night had a pub! Ontario dudes in a pub arm wrestling. and Cody slipped through a fence to try and get beer only to find the store was closed.

but tonight had funny quotes and wasted times. we have wine! in plastic cups!!

tomorrow is a cabin just outside of Sault Ste Marie. yay!

when i woke up on saturday i knew instantly that i was sick. not prairie dry throat sneeze sick, but actually cold/flu sick.

Blair's mom cooked us up a delicious pancake breakfast before we all headed out to explore 'Toon Town'. Ashley took Aaron, Steph and I to the university and showed us around campus, as well as inside. it was pretty much like a museum; dinosaurs, underground tunnels et all.

the group met at Amigo's and waited for the show to start. i would say i was quite grumpy and tired, and couldn't even drink my free beers. tragedy! but Aaron benefited. nervous, hacking, coughing, sneezing, napping... time went by slowly. finally we all played our sets to a seemingly uninterested crowd, but the biggest crowd we've played for. we didn't sell any CDs, either. bar shows, phf.
it took a long time to get home.. with waiting for the headlining bands to finish so we could get paid.
got 'home' and fell asleep instantly.

next morning we all went to the bus depot to say our goodbyes to Andy and Alex. they decided to give their van to an auto wrecker and bus back to Victoria. i can't even imagine a 20 hour bus ride.. ugh.

the drive to Winnipeg.. long.. boring.. we were all exhausted. i slept the entire way and i'm STILL tired.
we got to town at about 7 and found a hotel downtown to stay at. we went to Moxies for dinner and they fucked up my meal (second meal fuck up on this trip) and i got 25% off.
now i am currently sitting in our hotel room on a chair that continues to lower to the ground slowly..
i was the party pooper who opted out of exploring to have a shower and try not to feel so crappy. what a nice shower it was..

time for tv and kleenexes up nose.

my appetite has increased 5 times over. what is it about traveling that makes me want to eat 5 meals a day? it's scaring me; i don't want to be fat when i get home.

right now we're in saskatoon at blair's parents house.
regina was ok. perhaps the best sets from all of us, but the turn out was only 15 people.

we're getting more boring as we travel. whenever we do the video update we're so burnt out that it's really boring... nothing will compare to that crazy drunk vancouver video.. sad.

tomorrow (saturday) we have a show at Amigo's. big last show! wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

could we be staying in a sweeter house? i don't think so. the DiNinno brothers are amazingly nice.

we left Calgary pretty late after a long stop at Perkins for breakfast, where Andy backed up into a truck and we all ate way too much. "thank you!" tommy, our waiter.

i don't remember most of the drive because i was either playing pokemon or sleeping. we saw a ground hog.. or.. ground squirrel... or something.. like that. it was really cute.

it was sort of frustrating / confusing getting into Medicine Hat and we lost our 'caravan' of vehicles. namely, we lost Andy. but we all met up at the Ottoman where Robert was waiting for us.

we walked to a diner for some food, and has the worst service ever! i was so grumpy by the end of it. then Steph had a harsh fall on some gravel and sliced her knee open. it's pretty gnarly and gross.

we hung around a lot, i went on a jog with the ipod, we played, other bands played, it was good. it was a lot of fun.

afterwards we had a 4 car caravan that went to a 24 hour truck stop for food. lots of poutine and perogies. and liver? ew.

yes now i am ready for bed.

woke up in Kelowna, still tired. found "Timmy Ho's" for a breakfast bagel and chicken rice soup.

epic mountain drive. it was beautiful. i don't remember much... it was mostly just pokemon. lots of pokemon. there were some animals.. an intimidating raven, mountain goats, rams? what? i don't know.
many pit stops to stretch legs and get fresh air. then back to driving and pokemon. and some cheeeeezzzzzies.

arrived in Calgary and went straight downtown to Tubby Dog! yummy hot dogs, insane variety. insane size!! overwhelming.
got lost downtown. maybe not lost, but confused, and took a while to get to Blair's friend's house. her name is Trez? i think?

anyway, now we're all huddled around a table (again!), charging laptops, DS's and cell phones. we're trying to be quiet.

i'm tired. new daily video (soon!)! it's confusing.

so we had an interesting / drunk night in Vancouver on saturday. we went to Hoko's and spent time with our buddies CobrasX3 as they had a show! it was an intense night, and we're still pretty tired.

in Kelowna right now.. in a group of laptops around a table, talking and laughing.
so tired though...
our show in the park went really well. we played on a boat in a children's water park. surprisingly, lots of people showed up! well received! i hope...

this evening i borrowed my roommate's bike to go to Safeway. i failed to find the carob i was seeking for cookies.. James will be disappointed when he comes home.
i haven't operated a bike in a very long time. i'd say about 6 years, at least, sin ce i owned a bike and used it regularly. it was a beautiful night for a ride, and i must admit i miss biking.

i was listening to the new Portishead album Third i rode, and it's eerie gloomy nature fit well with my ride. i'm not much of a fan of Portishead's earlier work, but i'm finding myself falling in love with this newer one.

last night Aaron and myself (as Nail Salon) played a show at Brickyard with some friends of ours (Bear's Lair, Balacade).
now we're going on a 'tour' of sorts, or perhaps a road trip with some shows booked.
Nail Salon has a rad CD to sell (designed by good friend Michael Noppers!), if you'd like. it's $5, and availible soon at Ditch or through the Old Life Records website. or via Aaron & myself.

perhaps this blog will turn into a music/travel blog for the time we are gone. i will try to update sometimes... perhaps videos.. photos... who knows.

now, time to pack. we head out tomorrow.

so this is probably the first and last time i hype some sort of electronicy dance music. not that i don't like it, but i like to leave that stuff to the boss, Dboat.

Junior Boys mixed the most recent Body Language. the beginning is mellow and i sort of loose interest, but then there is one trigger track for me that brings the mix back to life again. it's my favourite song off the CD and is a creation by one of the founding members of Junior Boys. named Stereo Image, Johnny Dark left Junior Boys and started his own thing with vocals from San Serac, and it's really good.

i'm not sure.

my latest music obsession, which is on the verge of being replaced with MGMT, is two things:

Shogun Kunitoki. apparently, Finland is like a haven for weird electro music. as well as cute soft girl vocals over mellow pop keyboards (i guess kind of like Chromatics). this stuff is amazing. i just totally lost when i'm listening to this album. Tasankokaiku is not only pretty like lullabies, it totally gets me pumped up with heavy synth lines and (at times) and abrasive mirage of electronic sounds. layers and layers. no vocals, ever!

Collections Of Colonies Of Bees (yes, that's the band name) is a mixture of math rock's guitar technicality, pop's light bursts of fun, post-rock's gloomy ambient feel, and some weird glitchy/electro sounds. it builds and flutters as the songs advance. only 4 tracks long, each song is at least 7-10 minutes, which allows for each to have many different style changes throughout. the album is called Birds, and the tracks are named accordingly.

while drunk last week friday Bear's Lair ripped MGMT's Oraculat Spectacular to my laptop on my behalf. inebriated and ranting about the importance of emo to my adolescence, Electric Feet shocked me. i couldnt stop repeating 'this is such a single.' Bear's Lair then informed me it's really an album loaded with singles. to some degree i'll agree. it's all rad stuff. and a tour with the blindingly good Yeasayer is too great to fathom. but this shit p0wned me.

i think i'm late with all the hpye on this on, but i can't get enough of Yeasayer. it's like when i found out about Midlake's Trials and Van Occupanther (which i bought for my mother for christmas, and she really liked it!). so i guess i think of Yeasayer as a Midlake type band (with it's sing-a-long vibe), but with Animal Collective's spacey weirdness to it. they seem like the kind of band anyone could listen to and find a part of it they like. i guess that's why All Hour Cymbals' popularity is growing day by day, with many anticipating their north american tour.

A Hawk And A Hacksaw is mostly just Jeremy Barnes (who was the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel) along with violinist Heather Trost. i've only listened to the newest album, The Hun Hangar Ensemble, but i'm in love. if you're looking for a new gypsy/balkan/folk infusion (along the lines of Devotchka or Beirut), then this is it. interestingly enough, AHAAH have toured with Beirut, even! now, this guy is apparently amazing to see live. he plays everything himself, even while drumming! look at these live photos.

so yes i know.. Stupid Jerks is sort of defunct. i would like to think it has to do with Dreamboat and i being so busy, but were we really? i won't answer that, but i think there may be more 'time' now for some bloggin of musics.
perhaps not "new" music, as i've been really out of the loop lately with shit. plus it's that time of year where releases are slowing down.. and plus the demise of oink is still hurtin'. ***but i do have one gem in here.

so let me just share some things i have been listening to lately:

do you remember Azure Ray? or when people liked bands from Saddle Creek? Cursive, anyone? Azure Ray was one of my favourites, i'll admit. it was either them or Rilo Kiley, and i think i was one of the few people out of anyone i knew who did not like Rilo Kiley at all. so the other girl band was Azure Ray and i fell in love. so i'm reliving those old days by listening to Burn and Shiver on repeat. sort of alt-folk country with some dreamy pop electronica...

it's getting to be that time of year for me.. a time where i whip out the gloomy post-rock. you know, because the weather is shit and this music just seems to fit when i'm miserable and walking to work at 5pm. Mogwai has been a love of mine for a long time. i can't imagine people who've never listened to Mogwai before. you must have. if you're into post-rock music with heavy use of guitar distortion/effects with the tendency to be sort of eerie as well as loud/epic, then they're pretty much a staple. i think for me, Happy Songs For Happy People is my favourite album, plus it is one of their most popular.
